One of the common questions we get asked surrounding CBD is: ‘does CBD get you high?’ At Health Rack, this is something we are asked regularly by our customers and it is a very valid question. CBD originates from the cannabis plant (cannabis sativa), so does it get you high? In this article, we will explain the ins and outs of CBD and discuss how it differentiates from common recreational cannabis-based products.

Will CBD oil get you high?

The short answer is: no. CBD oil and other CBD products will NOT get you high! This may be surprising to some but, unlike other cannabinoid compounds found in cannabis sativa, CBD is not psychoactive. Because of this, it does not influence your mind, thoughts or behaviour in an undesirable way.

There are two main chemical compounds found in cannabis sativa: THC and CBD. THC is a widely known compound found in cannabis that affects you in a psychoactive way. When THC and CBD are extracted from the marijuana plant they are separated, turning them into different entities with different uses and benefits. CBD has none of the psychoactive effects of THC. CBD reacts differently with the brains receptors to create an entirely different effect to THC.

What is all the fuss about CBD?

So, CBD oil won’t get you high. But what will it do? The stigma surrounding cannabis has put many people off using CBD whilst also halting the discovery of its full benefits. However, times are changing and researchers are now working hard to unveil the multitude of possible benefits CBD can provide.

Currently, a common use for CBD oil is as a contemporary method of wellbeing. However, ongoing studies are delving into the potential for CBD oil for pain relief. With further research, there is hope that the CBD chemical compound could have life-changing benefits.

Will CBD oil show up on a drug test?

Another commonly asked question around CBD is ’will CBD oil fail a drug test?’ The answer to this resides in science. The common drug test for cannabis is via a routine immunoassay screening using urine. An immunoassay screening is a biological test with antibodies that are designed to detect THC, meaning that the test was developed to detect the THC compound.

This is good news for CBD oil users. However, do take caution as there is a very small amount of THC found in CBD and using an extremely high daily amount of CBD (1000 mg a day or higher) may result in exposure to around 3 mg of THC per day. This is possibly enough to activate a positive result on a drug test. Using the standard, recommended daily amount is unlikely to test positive for THC however.
